PageRank Does Nothing!

Well … not “nothing”. However, despite having some of my Google PageRank restored, this site is still not found in the first 100 pages (yes, I checked) of results. Oddly enough, almost every post I’ve written for other sites such as LongCountdown and MsDanielle are found in the first ten pages. That’s some great SEO you’ve got goin’ on there Nick and Danielle!

I do have some ideas on how to start appearing in Google’s results, but it won’t be cheap. Hopefully the online revenues earned elsewhere continue to flow regularly

Slight Loss On Yahoo!

I seem to have lost some rank on Yahoo!, which is just a little discomforting. Although Yahoo! is no longer the major player in online search, I hate the thought of losing ground to a scientist and two actors with the same name. Clearly my haphazard SEO gurella tactics are not working. That said, if you were to type “ジェイソン (Jason)”, the name I leave with comments on other sites, I’m the second non-commercial site listed.

Considering how Yahoo translates the search string before querying their database, I shouldn’t complain.

Still Number 1 on Ask!

It’s true. When my name is entered into Ask, it’s still sitting at the number one spot. Clearly the meta modifications and promotion that I’ve been doing hasn’t damaged my rep on this engine. It’s a shame that most people don’t use the site.

From what I’ve read about how Ask ranks pages, they should be right in line with both Yahoo and MSN, but it’s obvious that they’re using some other method when listing matches. One of my biggest concerns regarding these types of queries is the collection of my queries and automatic filtering to ensure sites I own and operate are left out of the results. When I’m feeling particularly paranoid, I will admit to connecting to an open WiFi access point with my PDA and checking these results. Considering the intelligence that goes on behind the screen at Google and some of the other sites, it wouldn’t surprise me if such a thing were actually happening.

Finally On Live’s First Page

Microsoft seems to have been kind enough to put me on the first page, which is a heck of a lot better than the sixth page result last time. Hopefully I can close the gap just a little bit more before next month to clinch the number one spot. While I might not have much sway on Google for this search term, owning it on Ask and MSN would be a decent consolation prize.

What’s Next?

It seems that some of the lessons I’ve learned from the online gurus over the last few months are certainly paying off. Building links and getting yourself out there is certainly a great way to get the search engines to pay attention, as is having an SEO-friendly site. Although there’s still quite a bit of work to do before I can claim victory, I’m glad to see that I’m that much closer to the finish line.

The next phase will be to introduce some advertising on a few sites, as well as the promotion of an upcoming mobile blogging tool, which I hope will be quite useful to bloggers who use Windows Mobile devices and want a full-featured application to post to, edit, note and monitor their sites. More on this later….

Is anyone else fighting for their name on the world’s big search engines? Have you had any success?

In a bit of shameless self-promotion, I’d like to present to the world TheCarbonBlog!

A few days ago, I had mentioned that I was accepting Vic’s challenge to start some new niche websites and earn a good amount of money in the coming year. This is but the first of three that I fully intend to start up before the start of 2009.

TheCarbonBlog will focus on companies and products that claim to be environmentally friendly. If they really are what they claim, they’ll get a nice carbon nanotube trophy. If they are just scamming us out of our money, they’ll get some used charcoal. Either way, the prize is carbon … even if it’s just a picture (I can’t seriously afford to send companies carbon nanotube trophies, after all).

The idea started quite a few months ago, first with my post on how people could use carbon credits the same way as we bought “indulgences” from the Catholic church not too long ago, and was reinforced when Nick wrote about a Sharp air conditioner that claimed to be more ecologically friendly than any previous model, but was no different from a 4 year old model by the same company. On top of this, there are literally hundreds of online companies that are offering carbon credits to us, but don’t actually use our money towards any carbon reduction projects. I have no intentions of becoming an uber preachy environmentalist like Al Gore, but I do feel strongly about people being taken advantage of when their heart is in the right place.

Saving the world is serious business. There’s no room for scammers.

If this is something you’re interested in, feel free to subscribe to the RSS. Also, should you know of a company or a product I should check out, just send me an email through the contact form, either on j2fi.net or TheCarbonBlog, and I’ll be sure to look into it ASAP.

So there’s my piece. What do you think?

It’s that time of year again, and everyone is giving their Top 10 lists of the year. Not to be outdone by others, I’ve decided to follow the crowd by presenting a list of my own. However, in keeping with the holiday spirit, I’ll share a little link love with some of the blogs I’ve found the most enjoyable over 2007. Not all of these blogs are still around, so I’ll split the list into “Active” and “Not So Active or Retired”.

First, the “Active Blogs” list:

LongCountdown.com – Nick and I are, from what I’ve gathered between our comments, rather close neighbours here in Kakamigahara, Japan. This past year has been incredibly busy for him and it’s been a priveledge to read about his journeys. From buying a house in Japan, to becoming a father, and everything inbetween. If you haven’t stopped by his site before, I strongly urge you to grab the notebook while digesting the holiday feasts.

MsDanielle – I happened to find Danielle’s site by accident, I think, because I can’t remember how I got there. But I’ve been a solid reader of her posts since March of this year and seen some of the most intelligent posts about PPC anywhere online get posted on that site. On top of being a useful source of knowledge, Danielle also brings us some casual posts, such as FlashBack Fridays that give readers the opportunity to remember some of our long lost youth

RobNeville.net – Although he’s been a bit busy lately, Rob puts out some great posts about technology and how it can actually be useful to humans. Before you say “I thought technology already was useful”, I suggest reading his post on Rethinking the Mouse-less Computer. This was the first of many posts I had read, and it was Rob’s clear thinking and writing style that kept me coming back. I look forward to some of this insights and rants in 2008.

MichaelMcKinlay.com – When not spamming his site with PayPerPost articles, he writes some pretty good posts Seriously, though, Mike is a long-time friend of Nick at LongCountdown (as well as lots of other people in Japan, it seems), and as a natural extension of participating over at Nick’s site, I started to read Mike’s. With the recent spanking Google has awarded so many PPP bloggers, we’ve been promised a different direction for MichaelMcKinlay.com in 2008, and I’m looking forward to seeing what that might be.

NihonHacks.com – I don’t know how, but I managed to stumble onto this site when it was just a week or so new. I think it had something to do with making seed planters out of tofu cartons …. Either way, I’ve been an avid reader ever since. Thomas is yet another blogger in Japan who is finding his way in the Land of the Rising Sun, and doing a pretty good job of it, it seems. My favourite article had to be the one about finding cheese in Japan. Many foreigners have a hard time finding really good cheese in this country, and some even give up. But this post will be sure to help lots of people get through those cravings for real cheddar, edem or swiss cheese.

Now, for the “Not so Active or Retired Blogs”

Nice4Rice (Retired) – This was my introduction to Nick at LongCountdown, and his ever positive attitude and inventive thinking. From this site I learned about a whole network of English-speaking Japanese bloggers and have been thankful ever since. Which reminds me … I still owe him that drink at Starbucks

The LiftPort Staff Blog (Not so Active) – I was introduced to this site after Brian from the same site left an amazingly well written rebuttal to one of my rants about space travel (he’s left many, so I can’t link just one), and it’s been exciting to keep up with the status of LiftPort in general. Unfortunately, the company has come under some difficult times, and updating their blog is not exactly high on the priority list. I will still keep my eye on them, though, as I feel space elevator technology is the most cost effective means of consistently escaping our planet’s gravity well.

CashForComments (Not so Active) – When the “Sneaky Bastard” Prija created this site he put a huge amount of effort into promoting the site and gained a pretty quick readership. I had never seen a site get so much attention from so many people so quickly, and was just a little jealous. All in all, the posts were enjoyable and even a little cheeky. Prija offered many ideas on how to bring people to our own sites with techniques and he was quite open with most of his ideas. But when BloggingTheMovie started to take shape, CashForComments just wasn’t an effective use of time anymore. This site went from buzz to kill in the span of a few months. But all’s not lost, for the site still exists and many of Prija’s ideas are sound enough to still work in this Google-altered Blogosphere … in the short-term, anyways.

BloggingTheMovie (Umm … Hello?) – As far as I know, this is Prija’s latest project, but his site has been pretty quiet about the status of this movie. I know that putting together something of this scale is hardly easy, and I know that he’s been putting an incredible amount of effort into it, but there hasn’t been an on-topic post about the subject on the blog for quite some time, or any post for that matter. Prija … what’s goin’ on?

But, on that note, these were the blogs that I visited the most in 2007. For anyone reading their stats, I’m the guy that was always using Opera … regardless of OS. If I didn’t include your site in here, don’t feel like I excluded you on purpose! I read hundreds of blogs every week. Most are through RSS, though. If I haven’t actually visited your site often enough to be on this list, it means that I haven’t had any valuable comments to leave.

I’m looking forward to the coming year as the Christmas break is one of the two bumper seasons for people to start blogging. With every new generation of blogger comes a new change to the ecology of the blogosphere. And with that change, there’s always something new to learn.

Today is sad day in the blogosphere … Nick (aka Spud Oregon) has decided to pull the plug on Nice4Rice.

Nick started the site six months ago to the day in an effort to promote free backlinks at a time when people were practically offering “favors” in exchange for them. With his creation of the unique “Give Rice” plugin, Nice4Rice became an overnight sensation.

I first heard about the site through Ms Danielle and have been an avid reader since. In an odd twist of coincidence, I later learned that Nick was living in the same Japanese city as my fiancee (now wife) and not too far from her home.

On a positive note, this will now give Nick some more time to spend with his family or catching up on sleep when little Rikuto is taking a nap. He still plans on keeping his personal blog going, though there may be fewer posts going forward.

Thanks for all the great posts, Nick. I wish you all the best in the future.

Darin wanted to substantially increase his comments before September 1 on his great Search Engine Marketing site. To speed the process a bit, he decided to offer cash to the person who wrote the x00th comment. In my case, I was commenter 700, which was good for a cash prize of $70.

Thanks for hosting the contest, Darin! I know precicely what to do with this money, too. Because my Reiko will be celebrating a nice round numbered birthday, I’ve been searching high and low for the perfect gift. I knew exactly what I wanted to get her but, considering how I’ve been unemployed for the last six weeks (which will soon be rectified), I’ve been a little short on cash. With this little boost, I’ll be sure to get Reiko a gift that she can enjoy for many years to come

If you haven’t been to Darin’s site, he provides some great tips on SEO and SEM. His three SEO tips are incredibly well written and should be read by anyone that wants to get more traffic through Google, Yahoo and other search engines. After applying some of his suggestions to this site, I noticed a traffic increase of 20% within a month and it continues to grow still.

Thank you, Darin, for hosting the contest. The prize money will be well spent

Now … time to head over to amazon.co.jp ….

Text doesn’t really give the subject the right “umph”, as I was trying to do a take on Charlie’s exciting exclaimation from Price is Right. But the prize is still valid, though.

Prija (a.k.a. the Sneaky Bastard) is running perhaps the most expensive contest ever held on the blogosphere, with the grand prize being a brand new 2008 Scion TC. This is being done for a few different reasons, but the primary goal is to draw some incredible media attention for his upcoming film, Blogging The Movie.

This car has recieved some incredible reviews over the last while, and it certainly looks like a great ride.

There are only 500 spots in the contest, so chances of winning are pretty good. Taking part involves buying some advertising space on the BloggingTheMovie site, so even if you don’t win, you have the opportunity for some great referrals. I’m really looking forward to the attention this contest will recieve as it could very well make Prija’s movie plans come true a heck of a lot faster than anticipated.

Head over to Blogging the Movie and check it out. Once the mainstream media get wind of this contest, chances are the 500 spots will be gone.

It’s been said that the best things in life are free, and this is certainly true for Reiko and I. And since Darin Carter’s giving away a free PlayStation 3 this month, why not capitalize on all the best free stuff?

I’ve been reading Darin’s internet marketing site regularily for quite some time, and he has some great insights in SEM (Search Engine Marketing) and SEO (Search Engine Optimization). For anyone that is thinking about starting a website and is unsure about how to target a specific audience online, I’d recommend reading his SEO Tips 1, 2 and 3. Each article is short and written in plain English, making the complexities of SEO less intimidating.

Darin’s Free PlayStation 3 Giveaway is being co-sponsored by the people at IAWMD (The International Association of WebMasters and Designers), and will run until the end of August 2007. If you already have a PlayStation 3, his Free Nintendo Wii contest is still open for submissions.

All that said, I wonder if this contest is open to residents of Japan …

Just when it seems that there’s been a movie made about everything, the Sneaky Bastard makes public his intentions to film a movie about 10 bloggers.

I’m not sure what it is about this idea, but I have this strange sense of excitement about it. Perhaps it’s because I will actually be able to relate to the people that are chronicled in the documentary, or perhaps it’s because this is the first time I’ve heard of such a film. But then of course, the word “documentary” is enough to get me excited most days alone, regardless of the subject ….

With Paperplane Productions producing the video, Mr. P (a.k.a. Sneaky Bastard) will scour the earth in search of 10 bloggers that blog everyday to ordinary people. These can be the authors behind popular, new, professional, personal, rambing, random, adult, elderly, and niche sites. If there’s a category I missed, that’s okay, because he’s looking for those, too! The key is to have a story that the world will love (or hate) to relate to, and Mr. P will fly to anywhere in the world to let you tell the tale.

At the moment, there is no way we can apply to be a part of the documentary, but if you keep checking his Blogging the Movie site, the instructions will soon be posted. Chances are that a contest will be posted and people will be invited to submit their sites that way.

Personally, I hope it’s a contest where readers vote for the winners. People could post their site, and if visitors think that the site is worth a mention, they give it a point. Not only would this have the potential to save Mr. P countless hours of labor, but it would give the blogging community as a whole the opportunity to play a role in this film about their world.

This has the potential to become one of the biggest contests the blogosphere has ever seen, so stop by and check it out.

Two weeks have passed since this site took part in Jimmy Huen’s ViralTags campaign, and I thought this would be a prime opportunity to examine the results of this Google PR and Technorati booster.

Because I had hopped on the bandwagon early in the campaign, this site was successfully linked from 200 unique sites. Not only was this a nice round number to have the boost stop at, but it also managed to do wonders to my Technorati Ranking and Authority levels.

Before taking part in this campaign, my Technorati rank had stagnated at 223,292, and was actually getting worse day by day. My Authority level wasn’t any better, sitting at a solid 24, and Google’s Page Rank had me sitting at 4/10.

As with many SEO boosting tactics that circulate around the blogosphere, response to the ViralTags campaign was swift. In the first three days this site’s Technorati Ranking had jumped from 223,292 to 70,196, with the Authority reaching 74 (a better breakdown of the first three days can be found here). Since then, I’ve seen the following results:

06/12/2007 – 70,196 (74 Auth)

06/13/2007 – 51,272 (95 Auth)

06/14/2007 – 42,623 (112 Auth)

06/15/2007 – 35,951 (131 Auth)

06/16/2007 – 30,970 (153 Auth)

06/17/2007 – 28,330 (165 Auth)

06/18/2007 – 24,247 (188 Auth)

06/19/2007 – 22,941 (196 Auth)

06/20/2007 – 21,729 (203 Auth)

06/21/2007 – 19,621 (220 Auth)

06/22/2007 – 19,090 (224 Auth)

I find these results absolutely remarkable, considering this was the first SEO campaign the site had ever taken part in, and there are tens of millions of sites monitored by Technorati. As expected, the numbers really slowed down after breaking 30K and moving from 22,941 to 19,090 was an up and down ride when monitoring the Technorati ranking every four to six hours. This doesn’t surprise me considering the number of popular blogs all over the planet and the incredible amount of competition that goes on once you start getting below the 20K level.

One concern that some people might have involves the 6 month lifespan for an Authority value. Authority is determined by the number of unique sites that link to your site in a six month period. If someone were to perform one of these SEO cheats only once, they would notice their Authority would plummet 6 months to the day afterwards. Hopefully in six months I’ll have enough decent content to actually warrant people linking to my site without these ploys. Though taking part in the occasional SEO campaign couldn’t hurt

All this said, this site’s Google PR hasn’t budged an inch. Of course, the PR rating is not expected to be updated by Google until August, but according to some of the PR calculators out there, this site is still a 4/10. But I won’t complain.

In retrospect, one of the greatest advantages to taking part in the ViralTags campaign has been the linking. Not the incoming links, but the outgoing. I’ve been able to visit so many amazing and powerful sites in the last two weeks that I might never have known about otherwise. Sites such as The Junky’s Wife, Nick Phillips’ site and the Blogger Whale.

I think the next projects I do will involve boosting my rank on Technorati.jp. Japanese is the second most popular blogging language on the planet, and though I’m currently limited to having a BabelFish translated site for the language (which Reiko tells me is a very poor translation), I plan on resolving that issue myself in the near future.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a pretty hot topic all over the web and in corporations as both people and businesses try to drive more an more traffic to their sites. Two weeks ago I took part in a ViralLinks campaign and the results were both immediate and dramatic. I’ve been a bit wary on starting another with the fear that my site could be classified as a splog (spam blog) by Google or Technorati. Considering how these two search engines account for 54% and 28% respectively of all referrals to this site, it’s concern enough for me to not go overboard all at once.

However, after reading about Darin Carter’s Bloglines List on Ms. Danielle’s great site, I decided it was time to add to my Bloglines feeds. What I like most about these SEO projects (aside from the obvious increase in site rankings) is the exposure to new sites. There are literally tens of millions of blogs out on the internet, and no two are alike. Many of the best sites are found through “word of mouth”, and this is a great way to spread that word and expand the blogging community.

So … that said, here’s the SEO tactic:

***Start Copying Here:***

Here are the rules:

1) If you don’t have a bloglines account signup for one, if you do have a bloglines account sign in to your account!

2) Write a short introduction paragraph about what how you found the Bloglines list and include a link to the blog that referred you to the list.

3) COPY the Rules and ENTIRE List below and post it to your blog. To avoid duplicate content and increase the amount of keywords your site can be accessible for, go ahead and change the titles of the blog. Just don’t change the links of the blog.

4) Take “My New List” and move them into the “The Original List”.

5) Add 3 Blogs that you’ve just added to your Bloglines List to the “My New List” section. Remember to also add the “List the Site link next to your new blogs (i.e. http://www.bloglines.com/sub/http://www.theblogurl.com/feed)

6) Add Everyone on this list to your Bloglines List by clicking on “List the Site.” Those who want good kharma will list you back. If not, you will for sure get the benefits of readers from the bloggers who continue this list after you.

My New List

Nihal’s Anything n Everything – List the Site

Screen real-estate is quite important to many of us, and with the recent drop in LCD prices, we’re able to have dual and even triple monitors on our computer at reasonable prices. For the last three years, I’ve been using WSXGA+ monitors (1680×1050 pixels) at work on a pair of 22″ Acer’s, as well as at home on my trusty HP zt3000 notebook.

The great thing about these higher resolutions is the ability to easily work in applications that make heavy use of floating toolbars. Applications like Visual Studio .NET, Adobe Photoshop and Premier and a host of other developer tools feel way too cramped on a single screen. Add to that the number of open applications one might want quick visual access to while working, and a single display just is not enough.

I’ve been considering going up to the next resolution level (WUXGA – 1920 x 1200 pixels) for about a year, now … but haven’t been able to justify the much higher cost of displays supporting this resolution. I don’t think Reiko would appreciate it very much if I dropped $700 on a new LCD rather than investing that into our immediate future.

But that said, it seems there might be a way around this. John Chow dot Com, a blog that helps you make money, is offering a chance to win a 24″ wide screen LCD monitor. To enter, we just have to write about it. This contest is sponsored by BlueFur, who just wants to let us know that they’re hosting Canada and the rest of the world.

We have until July 31st to make our entries, and the winner will be drawn the following day. The only stipulation to this contest is that we must have a blog. Done and done.

As an added bonus, the winner’s site will likely get an incredible amount of traffic following the contest, and a few thousand extra links from other sites in congratulations. It could make the Viral Links campaign results look like a small hiccup in comparison. John Chow dot com is one of the most popular blogs on the planet, so you’ll be sure to get some site recognition soon after.

So here’s my entry, and here’s hopin’ that I can bring that sweet 24″ LCD with me to Japan.

I wasn’t planning on writing this post until the weekend, but the results are about a hundred times better than I could have ever expected.

Three days ago, I took part in a simple site linking project started by Jimmy at FoundersCafe. The idea behind this is that sites that have lots of links going to them are given higher page ranks in Google as well as Technorati. On top of this, a person’s Technorati Authority (the number of unique sites that link to the blog) will increase.

Before taking part in this second run of ViralTags, I had noticed that my Technorati ranking was going down. The data goes as follows:

June 7 – 214,810 (24 Auth)

June 8 – 217,655 (24 Auth)

June 9 – 223,292 (24 Auth)

Suffice to say, it wasn’t very pretty. Naturally, one way to create a popular site is to be an active member in the blogging community and consistently writing interesting and/or valuable content in order to bring lots of new and repeat readers … but who has time for that?

Seriously, though …. The day after posting the ViralTags entry, my Technorati ranking had jumped up to 159,605 with an authority of 33. The rest of the day (June 10) broke out like so:

w00t! for breaking 100,000. Currently, Technorati has my ranking at 70,196 with an Authority of 74. Hopefully it will keep on going. That said, my Alexa ranking hasn’t budged in the last three days, and Google will not be updating their PageRank values until August (which is when I’ll actually be assigned a value).

If you haven’t had a chance to take part in this great linking project, feel free to copy the source from my site. Many thanks go out to Jimmy Huen at FoundersCafe for putting this together, and to Jon Lee for mentioning it!

I first heard about this from JonLee’s site. After a short little followup to FoundersCafe, I decided to give it a try. After all … if so many other people are doing it, why can’t I?

This appears to be a rather simple scheme to build up a (potentially) massive amount of backlinks, though unique from some of the other methods that we’ve seen in the past. What I really like about this method is that we can add our own anchor text to promote a site, which means there is no disadvantage to being at the top or bottom of the list.

========= Copy and Paste below this line ==========

<ins dateTime="2007-06-07T04:24:41+00:00">Instructions:</ins>

1.) Copy and paste the matrix of “ViralTags” below courtesy of Founders Cafe (to support Jimmy’s quest of launching his own Internet Startup with a shoestring budget, please consider subscribing to his Full RSS Feed to see his triumps and struggles in real time).

2.) Substitute the Host Tag and one of the “Viral Tags” in the matrix with your anchor text of choice with your blog’s URL. Please keep anchor text to a max of 3 words to keep the matrix size manageable.

3.) When you get a ping back from someone that has your link in one of their “Viral Tags”, practice good karma by copying his/her Host Tag’s anchor text (automatically the associated link will also be copied) and paste it over one of your “Viral Tags” below.

4.) Encourage and invite your readers to do the same and soon this can grow virally.

<ins dateTime="2007-06-07T03:48:27+00:00">Host Tag</ins>: Jason’s Random Thoughts

<ins dateTime="2007-06-07T03:48:27+00:00">Important:</ins> Once I get a ping back from you (I promise to do the best I can), I will add your anchor text and the associated link you designate as “Host Tag” here, replacing one of the “ViralTags” from the matrix above. As more and more bloggers copy and paste this matrix, the more backlinks you will have with your anchor text. If everybody who copy and paste from your blog does the same, pretty soon this will spread and go viral. So, the sooner you participate, the more links with anchor text you will receive.

======== Copy and Paste from Above this line ========

I’m really curious to see what this does for our Technorati rankings.
